Service Dog Training
Service Dog Training
Looking for service dog training in Oakland, CA? Dog Squad Dog Training can help you choose a dog that’s a good fit for service dog training. In many cases, we can train an existing dog to fit your needs if possible.
While service dogs are held to a higher standard than pets, your dog doesn’t have to be a puppy to learn the skills necessary to earn the vest. Learn how our certified service dog prep course can add essential skills to your dog’s repertoire.
What does it take to train a service dog?
When dog training for behavior, we always say that you don’t need to change a behavior if it doesn’t bother you (and doesn’t negatively affect others). Service dogs, however, will be in public spaces more often than the average dog, and they must be able to stay calm and obey commands in any situation.
Your dog will be assessed in the following areas before receiving certification:
- Basic obedience
- Public access
- Task training
Our professional dog trainer will work with your dog to keep them focused, and our private, in-home training model with a focus on consistency will ensure you achieve the same results.
Types of Service Dog Training
We offer a service dog prep training course for mobility service dogs and psychiatric service dogs. We do not train medical alert service dogs at this time.
A mobility service dog physically supports the handler, retrieves items, and opens doors. Due to the physical nature of the assigned tasks, a mobility assistance service dog must be at least 40% of the owner’s height and 50% of the owner’s weight.
A psychiatric service dog supports the handler’s mental health by blocking and covering, using deep touch therapy, and interrupting behavior.
If you need both physical and mental health support, we can task train your pup to suit all your needs.
